Gerrit Jan van de Werfhorst, born in Oosterwolde comes from a family of which grandfather was a church organist. This led to interest in the organ at an early age. Organ lessons were taken at the local music school.
From an early age he was occupied with improvising and composing in the field of chorales. The compositional art of Cor Kee and the improvisation art of Jan Jongepier have his great admiration. Marcel Dupré’s music is also highly appreciated by him. Lessons in improvisation were taken with Henk van de Maaten from Heerde and Gerrit ’t Hart from Ermelo. He also took lessons with Lucas Lindeboom, the former organist of the St Michaelskerk in Zwolle. In 1993 he won 2nd prize at the organist competition in Ede with an improvisation on the song "Let the cheerful song of praise rise".
As an organist he is associated with several churches. Many of his arrangements have already been published by various publishers, including in the subscription magazine "Orgelklanken".
