In 1976 the well-known writer and producer Frank Farian founded Boney M which dominated the European charts during the late seventies and early eighties. This is largely due to the qualities of the group’s lead singer, Liz Mitchell, and this pop group may be rightly referred to as a legend of the entire disco era. Boney M had eight No. 1 hits in the European charts and also boasted successful worldwide sales of LPs and singles with more than 40 million albums and over 65 million singles. In retrospective, it is of interest to note that Boney M was the first western pop group to perform in the former Soviet Union and it even appeared on the Red Square of Moscow where the group made a video. Though the band was extremely successful during live performances in Europe, it disappeared from the charts in 1982 and finally split in 1986.
However, even hateful comments like “one of the silliest groups of disco music” are not suited to diminish the group’s success as it becomes easily apparent by the medley which was arranged by Steve McMillan. He satisfies the demands of many bands asking for music by the Boney M group and consequently relied on the number one hits of this famous pop band.
