An example of South American folk music, the Milonga is a fast syncopated Latin dance and the precursor of the modern tango. This new composition is inspired by the work of Ástor Piazzolla (1921–1992) who was a leading Argentinian composer and bandoneón player who fused jazz and classical influences with traditional tango music elements to pioneer the Tango Nuevo style. (A bandoneón is a type of concertina – comparable to the accordion.) He utilised and manipulated the Milonga rhythm as an essential basis of his compositional style.
Selected from Folk Roots for Alto Saxophone. In this timeless new collection, Hywel Davies presents fresh interpretations of traditional British folk-tunes together with complementary folk-inspired original compositions for developing saxophonists to learn, enjoy and perform.
