Description

The term romantic first appeared in literature around 1800 and meant novel-like, narrative, also fantastic. In the history of music, Romanticism is an era that dates back to the 19th century. Romantic music has a predilection for fantastic or fairytale-like moods and often takes up extra-musical themes.

This period already begins with Beethoven's later works, the last Viennese classic. The poet E.T.A. Hoffmann wrote about Beethoven's 5th Symphony: Beethoven's music moves the levers of shock, fear, horror, pain and awakens the infinite longing that is the essence of Romanticism.

Piano music plays an important role in Romanticism. The progress of piano building meant that the instrument gained in sonority and richness of tone quality. The mechanics of the manual and pedal technique were also improved and enabled an unimagined increase in virtuoso playing, but also in melodic composition. The traditional cantabile playing increased to an espressivo.

This selection of light Romantic piano music is intended to make the richness of this music accessible to young piano players.
