Learning to play the Cello - 20 Questions for Liana Pereira

(19.11.2021)

Liana Pereira Liana Pereira has been playing the cello since the age of 14.

She has been giving lessons and conducting workshops and courses for cello and viola da gamba for many years....

REQUIREMENTS

What is the perfect starting age?

From the age of three! There are smaller models of the instrument for children. Otherwise, anytime after the decision to learn the cello has been made.

Do I have to learn to read music?

If you want to play the beautiful music written for cello, you have to be able to read music. In the Suzuki method, which I teach myself, learning is basically done without notes at first. First the notes are heard, spoken and imitated and only later read - like learning the mother tongue.

Are there instruments that are played in the same way?

Not directly, but a lot can be transferred from the violoncello to the viola da gamba family, which was played mainly in the Baroque period.

What physical requirements are advantageous?

Strength endurance, especially with regard to both hands and arms.

How do you know if you are ready for the instrument?

As soon as the anticipation of playing the cello outweighs possible obstacles, you are well prepared.

FINANCIAL

What does the instrument cost?

It is possible to rent a complete set (instrument, bow, case) from about € 18 per month. The prices vary greatly depending on the scale length (length measurement of a stringed instrument) and the quality of the instrument. An industrially manufactured instrument, for example, costs less than a master instrument. Entry-level models can be purchased from around €800; a really good cello costs between €4,000 and at least €8,000.

Are there other costs?

Yes. A floor protector (€18), rosin (bow resin; €20) and your own cello case (€300) are the 'three sacred' accessories that should not be missing from the very beginning!

How time-consuming is maintenance?

Maintenance is not complex, unless the instrument is covered with gut strings. Gut strings sound wonderful, but are sensitive to high humidity. With normal (steel) strings, however, it still happens that, for example, the tuning does not hold.

How should the instrument be transported?

The best way is to carry it on your back like a rucksack! If you are travelling by plane, it is best to book an extra seat just for the instrument. There are also special flight hard cases for the cargo hold, but this is really not recommended!

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Is it possible to teach oneself to play the instrument?

To some degree, yes. However, it is recommended to seek guidance from a teacher to prevent any potential postural harm. Achieving a pleasing sound and accurate intonation is reliant on receiving professional instruction.

How do you go about selecting appropriate practice material?

The best approach is to work alongside an expert or teacher who has a deep understanding of the material. Experience plays a significant role in this process, and those with limited knowledge may find it challenging to identify suitable material for themselves.

How can you practise without disturbing others?

The use of a mute is an effective solution. For the cello, several models are available, including metal mutes, wooden tridents, or rubber mutes for all four strings. While all of them significantly reduce the sound's volume, each has unique sound characteristics.

What are the various playing techniques?

As many as there are individuals. However, each style of music, whether classical, pop, or jazz, has its own set of demands on the instrument.

When can one expect to experience initial success?

From the very first lesson, every step should be viewed as a success! With a consistent routine of lessons and practice, a student can gain the confidence to perform in front of an audience in approximately one year. Nevertheless, this timeline depends on the student's personality, and determination plays a crucial role.

AND THEN...

What are popular pieces for the first recital?

All kinds of canons, songs from pop and film music, and little gems from the Baroque period.

What are the classics and what is your favorite piece?

Classics include Saint-Saëns – The Swan from the Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Säens, the 6 Suites a Violoncello Solo senza Basso by Johann Sebastian Bach, the sonatas for cello and basso continuo by Jean-Baptiste Bréval, the sonatas for cello and piano by Johannes Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven and Claude Debussy as well as the cello concertos by Joseph Haydn, Antonín Dvořák and Robert Schumann should definitely not be forgotten here either! I am particularly moved by the Cello Concerto by Edward Elgar.

How can you play music together with others?

From duets to piano trios, string quartets to orchestras and bands, there are many options available. Ensembles consisting solely of cellos, such as the Cello Quartet, can be particularly fascinating. The famous 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra have a special role, and many works have been composed and arranged specifically for them.

What role does the instrument play in ensembles?

In the classical orchestra, the cello group serves a dual role. First, it takes over the bass function and often plays in conjunction with the double basses. Second, the cello is often given the melody due to its expressive tone, which is particularly impressive in pieces such as the opening of Anton Bruckner's 7th Symphony. The sound of the cello is often compared to that of the human voice.

Are there stereotypes associated with the instrument and its players?

Yes, there are stereotypes, but they are not always accurate. Cellists are often considered to be quiet and introverted, but this is not always the case. Personally, I don't fit either of these stereotypes.
