for Violoncello (Bassoon) and Piano or for two Bass Instruments
This edition of Mozart’s Sonata for bassoon and violoncello K. 292 (196c) pursues an innovative concept: not only does it reproduce the obbligato parts in a strict observance of the “Urtext” of the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe, but it also adds a new dimension of sound to the interpretation of the work by providing an additional piano part that is wholly in keeping with the thoroughbass practice which was still very much alive in Mozart’s day.
This charming work can be played several ways from this edition: as a duo sonata following the transmitted version, as a solo sonata for violoncello or bassoon with piano accompaniment, and as a small ensemble work for two melody instruments (bassoons or violoncelli or one of each) and piano or harpsichord.
