Die 1891 komponierte Orgelsonate zeichnet sich durch ihre kontrastreiche Gestaltung aus. Der 1. Satz trägt den Titel "Phantasie" und besteht aus einem Andante amabile, auf den ein Agitato in freier Sonatenform folgt. Im 2. Satz wechseln choralartige Passagen mit fugierten Abschnitten, und der 3. Satz beginnt mit einer freien rhapsodischen Introduktion, an die sich eine Fuge, archaisch "Ricercar" genannt, anschließt.
