The piece opens with a delicate melody in the woodwinds. Soon, the brass instruments reinforce the theme with broad sonorities. They proclaim the main motif, which runs throughout the entire work. This interval of a fifth, G–D, sometimes inverted as a fourth, D–G, intertwines with other melodies—at times shining forth, at times vanishing behind an army of instruments.
