Titan, also die fünfsätzige Frühfassung der Symphonie Nr. 1, ist noch nie zuvor veröffentlicht worden. Die Universal Edition ist stolz darauf, in Verbindung mit der Neuen Kritischen Gesamtausgabe diese Partitur erstmals zur Verfügung zu stellen.
Mahler komponierte das Werk Anfang 1888 in Leipzig. Die Uraufführung fand dann als "symphonisches Gedicht" 1889 in Budapest statt.
