Als Mozart 1783 gezwungen war, Musik für ein Konzert in Linz zu beschaffen, schrieb er aus Zeitmangel Michael Haydns Sinfonie ab und komponierte lediglich eine langsame Einleitung. Lange Zeit galt das ganze Werk als Mozarts Sinfonie Nr. 37, KV 444.
