Koor – Bladmuziek & lesboeken

Het brede koorlandschap omvat mannen-, vrouwen-, kinder- en gemengde koren. Daarbij kunnen koren a capella, met pianobegeleiding of in combinatie met verschillende ensemble- en orkestbezetting musiceren.

De geschiedenis van de koorzang

Het beginpunt van de koorzang vormt de gregoriaanse koraal. Via de koormuziek van Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina en Orlando di Lasso komen we uit bij de koormuziek van Johann Sebastian Bach. Hij zorgde, net als Georg Philipp Telemann en Georg Friedrich Händel, voor een volledig zelfstandig opererend orkest naast het koor en betekende in die zin veel voor de ontwikkeling van het koorrepertoire.

In de klassieke periode ontstonden er voornamelijk geestelijke werken. Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert en Ludwig van Beethoven componeerden in deze tijd vele missen. Daarnaast kreeg het koor ook in de opera een steeds grotere rol toebedeeld.

De ontwikkeling van de koormuziek in de Romantiek wordt gekenmerkt door koorliederen en oratoriums. Zeer bekend zijn Elias en Paulus van Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy en de Requiems van Johannes Brahms en Giuseppe Verdi. In deze stijlperiode werd er ook een bezettingsrecord gevestigd: In het motet “Hora est” van Mendelssohn is iedere zangstem viermaal vertegenwoordigd. Grote koorsymfonieën, zoals bijvoorbeeld van Gustav Mahler, blijven echter een zeldzaamheid.

In de 20e eeuw hebben componisten als Anton Webern en Arnold Schönberg voor koor gecomponeerd, en tegenwoordig zijn onder andere John Rutter, Ola Gjeilo en Eric Whitacre bekende componistennamen in de koorwereld, die zich meer en meer ontwikkelt onder invloed van gospel, pop en jazz.
