Schumann's dream journey invites the listener on a hovering flight towards death. It is a window into his life which was often characterised by pain and longing. The inner conflict is revealed by the contrast in styles: his tonal musical language is expressively juxtaposed by the instrumental commentaries in contemporary idioms.
