John Sykes wrote The Keel Row, a Diversion for Piano in 1938. With its swing rhythms and jazzy harmonies, it is very much a piece of its time - the gay abandon of the inter-war years, the obverse of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land coin. It well fitted Sykes' considerable pianistic skills and makes a grand encore piece.
