Franz Josef Hirt was a Swiss pianist. From 1930 Hirt conducted a concert class at the Bern Conservatory. For his commitment to contemporary French music, the French government honoured him in 1927 with Palmes académiques, in 1948 with the title Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur and in 1957 with the title Officier de la Légion d’Honneur. Alfred Cortot appointed him to the École Normale de Musique in Paris.
