Josef Gingold was an American violinist and music teacher.
He emigrated to the United States in 1920, where he studied violin with Vladimir Graffman and Eugène Ysaÿe. After 1937 he was concertmaster (and occasional soloist) with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and later held the same position with the Cleveland Orchestra. He has published numerous books on violin technique, including those by Mazas and Kayser. His students included Volker Hartung, Sho-Mei Pelletier, who plays with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in Texas, and the famous violinist Joshua Bell. Before his death, he taught at Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music and Juilliard School in New York City. He played a Stradivari violin (ex-Captinao Martinelli) from 1683.for violin, string bass and piano.
