His Life

Johann Baptist Joseph Maximilian Reger was born in the German town of Brand. His mother was a pianist and his father an oboist, he was surrounded by music from an early age, and he went on to study music in Munich and Wiesbaden. Reger was well known during his lifetime, and his works were held in similar esteem to those of Richard Strauss. He died in Leipzig at the young age of 43.

His Work

Max Reger’s musical language is based on two basic elements, combining J.S Bach’s contrapuntal tradition, with an elaborate late-Romantic, sometimes even modern harmony. He was greatly influenced by Brahms, Liszt and Wagner. Most of Reger’s works can be considered sacred music. He ’rediscovered’ Protestant chant, and many musical forms associated with it, including the choral prelude, fantasia, fugue and passacaglia. His works are generally quite technically challenging, which is why Reger was often criticised by his contemporaries. In addition to organ and piano music, Max Reger also composed choral music, orchestral music, chamber music and art song.
