Jede Zeit hört und deutet Bach neu, und jede Zeit liest auch die Quellen neu und mit anderen Augen. 40 Jahre nach Erscheinen der Matthäus-Passion in der Neuen Bach-Ausgabe hat Klaus Hofmann, der langjährige Leiter des Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Instituts Göttingen und Redakteur der Neuen Bach-Ausgabe, eine neue Edition erstellt. Hofmann stellt die Quellenphilologie ganz in den Dienst der musikalischen Praxis und der detaillierten Ermittlung der Intentionen Bachs. Es ist unter Kennern kein Geheimnis, dass Bachs Originalpartitur und die fast 500 Notenseiten umfassenden originalen Aufführungsstimmen voller Unklarheiten und Widersprüche stecken, namentlich zur Artikulation, die zu immer neuen Deutungen herausfordern. Hofmann diskutiert diese und andere Probleme im Kritischen Bericht in knapper Form und gelangt dabei nicht selten zu neuen Lösungen. Umfassende Analogieergänzungen bieten wertvolle Hilfen für die Interpretation. Auch das Stimmenmaterial genügt allen Bedürfnissen der Praxis. So sind u.a. die Textanfänge jedes Satzes auch in den Instrumentalstimmen (auch bei Tacetvermerken) eingetragen. Kurzum – eine praxisorientierte Urtext-Ausgabe auf dem aktuellen Stand der Bach-Forschung.
