Il postiglione d'amore

Alfred Bösendorfer processes the story of "Il Postiglione d'Amore" (The Messenger of Love) in an elegant overture in the style of Gioacchino Rossini, without writing pure programme music.

In a castle in Italy, a young countess waits for the return of her beloved husband. Longing and impatient melodies, especially in the transverse flute, illustrate the Countess's tension. Trumpet and horn announce the messenger on horseback, who hurries quickly and finally delivers the joyful message. The signal sounds a second time and the brilliant main theme is taken up again: The count and his entourage have arrived at their home castle, which is duly celebrated.
