The Origins of the Drums

Dating back to pre-history, it is believed that drums were the first instruments used by man. The earliest records of a drum date back as far as 6000BC, and drums were made from all sorts of animal hides and natural materials. Originally found in Asia and Africa, drums made their way to Europe and North America through Italy and Greece.

It was at the start of the 17th Century, that a variety of percussive drums and instruments started being used in classical music, and it was in the 1890s that the first foot pedals were introduced, paving the way for the modern drum set. In the 1920s, the icing on the cake for the drum kit, the Hi-Hat, was introduced, and drum kits were a feature in Jazz, Bebop, Rock, Pop and Classical Music throughout the 20th Century.
