Originally for piano, Antonin Dvorak's Humoreske Op.101, No.7 has been newly arranged for double bass and piano by David Heyes. This iconic and instantly recognisable melody transcribes well for the intermediate bassist and the edition includes accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings.
There are effective and accessible musical and melodic challenges for the adventurous player and this has much to offer as a concert or study piece. The opening theme is jaunty and picaresque, contrasting a more lyrical, romantic and dramatic middle section, returning to the simple and evocative melody to bring the piece to a successful conclusion.
Humoreske would suit a Grade 7/8 bassist with some knowledge of basic thumb position, but there are few challenges that cannot be overcome with a little work and enthusiasm.
A sure-fire hit with audiences. Enjoy!
