Weitgehend unbekannt ist bis heute, dass auch Gounod „sein“ „Stabat Mater“ schrieb. Dass dieses Werk außerhalb seines Entstehungslandes nie richtig Fuß fassen konnte, liegt vor allem am französischen Text des Gounod'schen Originals und an der Instrumentierung für großes romantisches Orchester.
Hier liegt erstmals eine deutsche Fassung vor (der französische Text wurde beibehalten), und die Begleitung wurde auf die Orgel reduziert, wodurch Aufführungen dieses klangschönen, relativ kurzen Werkes (ca. 10 min.) auch hierzulande nun nichts mehr im Wege steht. Ein romantischer Höhepunkt für jedes Passionskonzert und einer jeden Andacht!
