Edvard Griegs Schauspielmusik zu Ibsens Drama Peer Gynt entstand in den Jahren 1874 - 1876. Die wirkungsvollsten Stücke daraus stellte der Komponist später zu zwei Orchestersuiten zusammen, deren erste besonders populär wurde und hier in einer Bearbeitung für Flöten erscheint.
Die Stimmen stellen mittlere Anforderungen an die Spieler. Die 1. Flöte ist meist Melodieträgerin, wird aber darin von der 2. oder 3. Flöte oft unterstützt bzw. abgelöst.
Beim Blick in die Partitur ist zu sehen, dass die 4. Flöte die tiefste Stimme ist, während die 5. Flöte in der Mittellage spielt. Die 5. Flöte ist also keine Bassstimme, sondern eine Zusatzstimme, die den Satz klanglich ergänzt und vervollkommnet.
