New Reconstruction by Jan Devlieger
By this C-minor Suite only the score of the first harpsichord has come down to us. In fact, Handel may well never have written out the score for the second harpsichord and instead have improvised it. Of course this is regrettable, but it does leave room for various reconstructions and interpretations.
Architectonically and aesthetically, the final movement of this suite is problematic. Compared to the other movements, this Chaconne is too short; probably it is unfinished. In the present edition this movement was not only provided with a score for a second harpsichord; it was also extended so as to give the suite a much better equilibrium.
