In einem Manuskript, das heute innerhalb des Bestandes kirchlicher Musikhandschriften des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts der Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek Frankfurt am Main aufbewahrt wird, wurden auf Anregung u.a. von Georg Philipp Telemann zahlreiche Kirchenkantaten zeitgenössischer Komponisten zusammengetragen, darunter 50 Kantaten von Gottfried August Homilius.
"Er übet Gewalt" wurde vermutlich in den Jahren 1777, 1785 und 1790 in Frankfurt aufgeführt. Die Manuskripte wurden mit einiger Sicherheit von Johann Conrad Seibert erstellt.
