Pilky

Leoš Janacek was regarded at his time only as a "simple" folklorist. In reality, Janacek has been very thorough in collecting and studying folk songs. The exploration of folk melody and language has become the basis of his own musical expression. He composed the orchestral suite "Lachian Dances" in the years 1889-1890. The 6 dances are exemplary for Janacek's handling of folklore and shows his connection with his homeland. In 1891 Janacek used the "Lachian Dances" in the ballet "Rákos Rakoczy" (Picture of Moravian Slovakia). His concluding dance "Pilky" (The Saw) is one of Janacek's most popular compositions, whereby saws are quoted in the main melodic motif.
