Description

Die Ouvertüre (nicht für das Theater gedacht, sondern im Sinn einer "Symphonischen Dichtung" so genannt) zu Hamlet von Shakespeare entstand ab August 1852 und wurde vom Komponisten in früher Fassung an Liszt und Schumann geschickt. Beide lobten das Werk hoch und brachten es zur Aufführung in Weimar bzw. Düsseldorf.

Wie bei allen Kompositionen unterzog Joachim das Werk mehreren Revisionen und erst im November 1854 kam es zur endgültigen Partiturreinschrift.

Johannes Brahms, der ab 1853 bis an sein Lebensende engen freundschaftlichen Umgang mit Joachim pflegte, dürfte seine Bearbeitung im Verlauf des Winters 1853/1854 angefertigt haben.
