Johann Kuhnau war Amtsvorgänger von J. S. Bach im Leipziger Thomaskantorat. Für seine Psalmvertonung verwendete er die Form der Kantate. In sieben Sätzen musizieren Solisten und Chor in unterschiedlichen Koppelungen mit Streichern und Blechbläsern. Ein Orgelauszug ermöglicht auch eine Aufführung mit Chor und Orgel allein.
