Adolf Misek, Schüler von Franz Simandl, gehört zu den bekanntesten Kontrabasisten aus der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Neben seiner Position als Solo-Kontrabassist bei den Wienern Philharmonikern unterrichtete er sowohl in Wien als auch in Prag an den Hochschulen für Musik.
Er wird als einer der wichtigsten Komponisten der spätromantischen Epoche betrachtet. Die vorliegende Sonate Nr. 2 wurde 1911 komponiert. Die viersätzige Sonate ist eines der Standardwerke, die jeder Kontrabassist einmal gespielt haben sollte.
