Sergej Prokofjew ging im Jahr 1918 in die USA, wo er im darauffolgenden Jahr von der Chicago Opera Company den Opernauftrag erhielt. Die Uraufführung erfolgte dann dort am 30. Dezember 1921. Die Oper wurde in einer vom Komponisten und Vera Yanocopulos erstellten französischen Übertragung gegeben.
