A fun fact about Stainer & Bell, is that not one of the original six partners was named Stainer or Bell, they chose the name for its ring! Despite moving offices numerous times, the British family-run publisher has always been London based, and the head office is currently in Finchley Central.
As they were starting out, they acquired the rights to music by Charles Villiers Stanford, Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams amongst others. From there they incorporated both Augener and Galliard publishing houses, and in 1917, they were appointed publisher of the Carnegie Edition.
As a diverse and multi-faceted publisher, they have many exciting current initiatives. Their online series Choral Now has a wide range of choral music by upcoming British composers like Ronald Corp, Russell Hepplewhite and Shruthi Rajasekar, alongside new critical editions of choral works by Vaughan Williams, Stanford and Herbert Howells. They have a wide range of contemporary British organ works, and their pioneering software HymnQuest catalogues and collects hymns old and new in all styles for all church goers, choral singers and organists alike.
