Cape Horn

Cape Horn is located at the southern tip of South America, on the Chilean island of Isla Hornos. For centuries, sailing around this rock was considered one of the most dangerous shipping routes to reach the Pacific from the Atlantic. According to tradition, Sir Francis Drake discovered Cape Horn in 1578 and the Dutch navigator Willem Cornelisz Schouten sailed around it for the first time in 1616. He also gave the massif the name of his Dutch hometown of Hoorn.

It is estimated that over 800 ships with 10,000 crew members sank in the icy waters during the circumnavigation. The piece Cape Horn - a solo for horn and wind orchestra - is intended to depict the beauty, but also the danger of this region.

The composer Otto M. Schwarz is keen to write new solo works for wind orchestra. The tonal language of his main genre, film music, is just as evident as experimental parts and catchy tunes.
