The basic idea behind the music was to contrast the futuristic images of the “Space Opera” Star Wars with non-futuristic film music, in order to offer the audience an emotionally familiar sound frame, with familiar western classical orchestral sounds. Using Richard Wagner as a model, Williams relied on recurring leitmotifs for characters and locations.
Originally, George Lucas imagined a soundtrack similar to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, using existing music by well-known composers, however, John Williams suggested using new, original composition and leitmotifs. In the first film though, he followed many of George Lucas’s suggestions, and there are themes from the works of composers such as Gustav Holst, Erich Korngold, William Walton, Sergei Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky. In later “Star Wars” films, Williams used existing compositions far less often, and he was at the forefront of current developments in the world of film music.
“So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it’s gratifying to have something you have done linger in people’s memories.” John Williams
With his Oscar-winning film music for “Star Wars”, John Williams has created a work known far beyond film franchise. Even people who have not seen a single ’Star Wars’ film know the great recurring melodies from the films, which have been performed by classical orchestras all round the world, including by the internationally renowned orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of John Williams himself.
