Franz Liszts Etudes d'exécution transcendante (1851) nehmen als für den Konzertsaal bestimmte Etüden in der Klaviermusik des 19. Jahrhunderts eine Schlüsselstellung ein. Von Liszt als »Experimentierfeld« der Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten des Klaviers und zugleich als eine Art Spektrum der Klaviertechnik konzipiert, waren sie auch für viele Pianisten richtungweisend, die Liszts Musik im übrigen reserviert gegenüberstanden.
Anhand dieses Zyklus und seiner vorausgehenden Fassungen aus den Jahren 1826 und 1837 legt Christian Ubber Liszts Entwicklung als Komponist und Pianist innerhalb eines Vierteljahrhunderts dar. Dabei werden gleichermaßen kompositionstechnische und pianistische Fragestellungen erörtert.
