Theodor Uhlig war ein nichtehelicher Sohn von Friedrich August II von Sachsen. Ab 1841 war er Geiger in der Dresdner Hofkapelle, wo er Richard Wagner kennenlernte und zu einem seiner engsten Freunde und verlässlichsten Helfer wurde. Die Handschrift des vorliegenden Quintetts stammt aus der Sammlung des Kreismuseums Wurzen (bei Leipzig) und spiegelt in Form und Ausdruck den romantischen Zeitgeist Uhligs wider. Es ist eine unbedingte Bereicherung des Repertoires für romantische Bläserquintettmusik und wird sich rasch seinen Platz in den Konzertsälen erobern.
